The national management plan for cormorants will be revised

The Government has today commissioned the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the Swedish Marine and Water Authority to revise the national management plan for cormorants. The authorities must also compile knowledge about the effects of cormorants on fish stocks and carry out predation and foraging studies that provide support for ecosystem-based management.

The situation for several coastal fish stocks is worrying and the fishing industry is facing major challenges. A basic precondition for the fishing industry is that there is access to long-term fishable stocks. It is therefore necessary to take a holistic approach and all tools that can enable the recovery of fish stocks need to be reviewed.

- The cormorant management must, among other things, aim for the population to be sustainable from a coastal environment perspective and the government believes that there is reason to revise the management plan to include more perspectives, increased knowledge and changed hunting regulations, says Minister of Rural Affairs Anna-Caren Sätherberg.

The purpose of the revision of the management plan is i.a. to reduce serious damage to the fishing industry caused by cormorants. The effects of cormorants on fish stocks therefore need to be included in ecosystem-based management, with a focus on fish species and fish stocks that are threatened or need to recover. The management plan shall also, if deemed appropriate and compatible with EU law, facilitate multi-year protection hunting* decisions and the use of more efficient hunt- and scaring methods as a complement to the hunting conducted with firearms.
* Note: “protection hunting” is a direct, but not good, translation of the Swedish term “skyddsjakts”, which is a strange, very broad term as it includes not only hunting/shooting of cormorants but e.g. also oiling and pricking of eggs. Jan K

To be able to introduce a more adaptive and ecosystem-based cormorant management, the government believes that knowledge about cormorant predation and foraging needs to increase. The studies are expected to be used in cormorant management and as a support for fisheries management, taking into account the possibilities of protecting and reducing the impact on threatened fish stocks or in protected areas.

Moin,
den - national management plan for cormorants - gibts ja schon lange sowohl in S,DK,N.
Nun hat man halt festgestellt das der nicht mehr ausreichend ist, das sich die Bestænde stark vermehrt haben und vor allen das Gefahr fuer andere Arten von einer bisher "ueber"schuetzten Art ausgehen.
Nicht nur Gefahr fuer andere Arten, nun geht es ans Eingemachte, um Fangquoten, um Tourismus.
Das Argument Arten- und Naturschutz, Ueberbestænde hat doch diesen trægen Apparat bisher auch nicht interessiert!
Ich kann nur froh sein das man bei mir im Trøndelag seit Jahren das Problem richtig einschætzt , nicht von der Trægheit einer EU-Behørde abhængig ist, dort wo Kormoran oder Biber zum Problem werden da wird auch gehandlet bzw gibt es seit Jahren festgelegte Abschussraten wie bei
Hirsch,Elch,Wildscheinen, Fuechse, Wølfen ... oder halt dem Hecht im Forellensee.
Vergræmung ist Quatsch, dann fressen sie wo anders, so wie es eben auch andere Tierarten tun.
Alternative wære wir ueberlassen alles der Natur, dann muss aber auch die extensive Fisch- und Landwirtschaft verschwinden.
Dann muss man aber auch den Vogelliebhabern erklæren warum Forellen in (Hotel)Bæche oder Aale in (Vereins)Gewæsser aussetzt werden nur mit dem Ziel seinen Spass zu befriedigen und /oder Geld zu verdienen.
